amazon drama pilots 2014 Amazon's 3rd pilot season: 'Hand of God' and 'Hysteria' get big thumbs downAmazon Studios debuted its third pilot season Thursday (Aug. 28), premiering pilots for three comedies and two dramas, which viewers can rate and review to determine which ones get made into series.

Whereas I found all three comedies fun, interesting and definitely worthy of more episodes, I found the dramas … fairly terrible.

1. ‘Hand of God’

I really wanted to like this show because the cast is terrific. Ron Perlman stars as Judge Harris,
a morally corrupt married man with a high-end call girl on the
side, who suffers a mental breakdown and goes on a vigilante
quest to find the rapist who tore his family apart. Dana Delany is his wife and Alona Tal is his daughter-in-law. But the plot is terribly depressing and not in a good way, like on other well-made dramas. It’s just depressing and awful for the sake of being depressing and awful. There are also several things in the pilot that cross over into complete absurdity. Don’t waste your time.

2. ‘Hysteria’

If you’re looking for a good laugh, this one is the pilot for you. However, “Hysteria” is not a comedy. It’s about members of a girls’ competitive dance team being stricken with a psycho-physiological illness that manifests itself in violent fits and spasms and then begins spreading in the community through technology. Neurologist Mena Suvari is on the case. It’s another one not to waste your time on, though I can’t say enough good things about the three actual comedies in Amazon’s third pilot season, “The Cosmopolitans,” “Red Oaks” and “Really.” Definitely check those out.
