According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dr. Luke’s current contract with Sony Music made work with Universal Music Group (which covers “Idol”) complicated. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, also has too many producing commitments to make the time needed for judging feasible.
As the producer of such hits as Kelly Clarkson‘s “Since U Been Gone” and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” as well as non-“Idol” names like Pink and Katy Perry, Dr. Luke seemed like an ideal choice to identify and nurture pop talent on the show. The two remaining judges for “Idol” Season 13 — Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban — in contrast, are more associated with performance than production.
This doesn’t leave too many names left in the “American Idol” judges’ pool. Scooter Braun, the manager of Justin Bieber and other pop stars, has reportedly been asked but might be too busy. Jennifer Hudson, an early name rumored as a judge, has apparently been scrapped. Other possibilities have reportedly declined the job opportunity.
