Jacob Lusk has built his “Idol” reputation on turning in dependably solid performances. He did the same thing Wednesday (March 30) evening, turning in a note perfect version of Elton John’s “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.”
Of course, we expect no less from Jacob, who — let’s face it — could probably out Mary J. Mary J. Blige.
Sadly, though, Jacob also fell victim to the curse of The Boring Elton John Theme.
We were moved — but not too far. Jacob’s performance was, like most of the rest of the night’s songs, forgettable. Maybe if Elton had been in the house, the energy level would have been a smidge higher?
In any case, Steven Tyler didn’t notice. He stole Randy’s favorite word in his appraisal of Jacob’s performance, saying “You slayed me.” Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez spent most of her critique praising producer Tricky’s arrangement. Nice, but hardly helpful for the voters. And Randy Jackson, who was in music nerd mode, told Jacob he wished he hadn’t “gone to the modulation” on the final note and gone full throttle.
“Always remember you’ve got that racehorse and that gas in the tank,” said Jackson. “Give me one spot in these songs. Find that one spot in every one where you go, yo, I got you all but this is my Jacob spot.”
How do you think Jacob did?
