nigel lythgoe idol gi 320 'American Idol': Nigel Lythgoe floats idea of judging changesNigel Lythgoe says “American Idol” fans should be prepared for more disappointment like what they experienced last week with Pia Toscano‘s dismissal. He also, however, says he might “suggest” a change to the show’s voting procedure for the future.

“If we change the rules, maybe next season, maybe [we’d] look at doing the same as we do on ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’” which Lythgoe executive produces and judges, he tells Yahoo Music. “America votes for the Bottom 3, and the judges decide who goes home. They take the blame.” (Sounds a little bit like what Toscano herself suggested on the “Today” show Tuesday.)

Lythgoe makes clear, though, that he doesn’t have the power to do that. “I’d certainly suggest it,” he says. “It’s not my format, so it isn’t something that I could do. If you’re going to change the format, you’d have to go to, I guess, [‘Idol’ creator] Simon Fuller and say, are you prepared to change the format.”

As for Toscano, while last week was the first time she was in the Bottom 3 on “Idol,” Lythgoe says that based on the voting results he saw, “she was never a frontrunner.” He adds, though, that viewers should steel themselves for similar shocks in the weeks to come.

“When I heard she was going, I was pretty upset — angry, you could say,” he says. “But the more I thought about it … I realized at the end of the day, this is going to happen every week now. The talent is so strong.”
