After a middling week of performances, MK Nobilette, Jena Irene and Emily Piriz all found themselves on the dreaded stools awaiting the final results. But who went home?

Ultimately, it was Emily who found herself singing for her life. But since it was so early in the competition, the judges declined to use their save. Here’s how the whole thing went down:

The energy in the “American Idol” studio Wednesday night was off, but apparently the awkward feeling stuck around for another day because the strange video of the Top 12 singing “Home” half-shot on cell phone — with Jena saying a very appropriate “this is so awkward” in the middle — segued into an even weirder singalong in the audience with some more of Wednesday’s off-beat clapping. (Please, audience, we beg: STOP CLAPPING during slow songs.)

After another vignette of the singers at dinner, dissecting their performances and critiques, the show devoted five minutes to Harry Connick Jr. explaining why he was so harsh on the singers and saying that he thinks this is the best group of talent since the first season. That might not be true, Harry, but it is nice that he tries to give them critiques they could use.

Then it was time for some results. Emily, Sam, Jessica and Ben were the first ones called to the stage, and Ryan Seacrest immediately sent Emily to the bottom — which meant the other three were safe.

Musical interlude time! Season 10 champion Phillip Phillips returned to perform his new single, “Raging Fire,” which pretty much sounds like his other singles, which means it’s entirely pleasant to listen to him growl through.

The next group to get their results included Dexter, Jena, Alex and Majesty. Dexter, Majesty and Alex were safe, with Jena heading to her Bottom 3 stool.

Another musical Interlude! Randy got to introduce his choice for the whole emerging artists thing they’re doing this season: Kodaline, from Ireland. They sang one of those slow-ish, Coldplay-esque, rock-y songs that will play incredibly well on the radio, but was a little meh for a first introduction.

Finally, Seacrest called up the last group of finalists: Malaya, MK, CJ and Caleb, with MK heading to the Bottom 3 for the second week in a row.

Unfortunately, Emily’s rendition of “Stars” wasn’t enough for the judges to save her and she wound up going home.

Did the right people make it through? Did the right person go home? Sound off in the comments.
