Malaya Watson, MK Nobilette and Kristen O’Connor were the first three singers sent to the bottom. Which one went home?

In the end, Kristen was sent packing. There is a save, which expires at Top 6 week, but clearly the judges weren’t going to use it the very first week — and they didn’t. Here’s how it went down:

The first group brought onstage to hear results was Malaya, Jena, Alex and Ben. While Ben, Alex and Jena were sent to safety, Malaya was sent to the first stool of doom. (That wasn’t too shocking since her rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby” was all over the place — in a bad way.)

The second group included MK, Sam, Majesty and Dexter. Ryan Seacrest sent Dexter, Majesty and Sam to safety, but MK unfortunately landed on her own stool in the Bottom 3. In the last group were C.J., Jessica, Emily, Kristen and Caleb but Kristen was sent to the bottom with MK and Malaya before ultimately being sent home.

The show featured a few fun pre-taped moments: a cute little video of what happened after the show — a group dinner where they debriefed about their first live experience, their feedback, the celebs who tweeted them — and packages of Randy Jackson in his new mentor role. (Yep, confirmation that we’re not rid of the Dawg any time soon; he’s styling himself as a Jimmy Iovine-type.)

A couple more cool new things: The Facebook profile pictures of the people who voted for her using the social media platform flashed onscreen while she sang her save song. Very interesting new feature. Also, the contestants sing their own goodbye songs before their portraits above the studio are dimmed. How very “Hunger Games” of them.

Oh, and there was the year’s first delightfully cheesy group number. This time, the show opened with a medley of “Counting Stars” and “Radioactive.” The show is making a point to feel very different from past years, but this was a throwback to the old “Idol” we know and love (or at least remember fondly).

The guest performers included last year’s winner, Candice Glover, and Jake Bugg.

What did you think of the Top 13 results? Did the right singer go home?
