the good guys idol 'American Idol' Top 3 Live: Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks give Lee two standing ovationsZap2it’s weekly “Dispatches from Inside the ‘Idol’ Dome” brings
fanatics like you (and us) closer to all the action. What didn’t viewers
see on the TV broadcast? We got it covered.

There were a lot of celebrities in the house and a nice Simon Cowell-Lee Dewyze moment. What else happened behind the scenes?

The ‘Good Guys’ and Gals

  • Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks of “The Good Guys” were on hand. We’d have to guess it’s more to promote their new show — which gets a preview before “Idol” on Wednesday (May 19). They recently told Zap2it’s Korbi TV all about “The Good Guys” — than because of their “Idol” fandom, but we will say that they stood to applaud Crystal Bowersox’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” and Lee Dewyze’s “Simple Man.” They leapt to their feet (along with everyone else) for Lee’s “Hallelujah.”
  • Brad and Colin must have found a lot of things hilarious, because they were talking and giggling a lot. At least they seemed to enjoy themselves. Also — Brad is not as tall and Colin is taller than we thought.
  • Cory the Warm-up Host spotted Brad’s son George single out his sister Mary as a big fan, so he gave George a T-shirt to give to Mary. Then, because he was so nice about his sister, Cory gave George an iPod Touch. It was nice and all, but how about giving the prizes to kids whose parents aren’t stars, Cory?
  • Melissa Etheridge was in the house, and Crystal Bowersox told Zap2it backstage that she knew Melissa was coming but that she picked “Come to My Window” before Melissa decided to attend. She didn’t pick the song because she knew Melissa was coming.
  • It also looked like “24′ actress Mary-Lynn Rajskub was sitting near Melissa Etheridge, but we can’t swear to it. “24” is a FOX show, though, and we’ve seen other stars from it at “Idol” before.

Judges’ shenanigans

  • There was an on-camera fake scare when Crystal popped up behind Ellen DeGeneres. But off-camera, there were two actual real scares. Casey James came up behind Kara and Simon before his pre-commercial shot, and Crystal snuck behind the judges’ table for hers. Each time the judges were quite startled — it’s too bad they couldn’t get that on tape instead of using the fake scare.
  • The judges were all over the place, hugging all the celebrities and six or seven people that we didn’t recognize. Who could they have been? It’s a mystery, but it’s unusual to see the judges stick around in the studio during commercial breaks.
  • Right before Lee’s performance of “Hallelujah,” Simon Cowell had a nice long talk with him, then shook his hand, clapped him on the back and sent him up on stage. Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that pep talk.

The unwashed masses

  • A mom and her two children were all dressed like “Desperately Seeking Susan” extras. Cute on her tween daughters, but on the 40-year-old mom? Frightening.
  • There was a 10-year-old boy sitting in front of us who could not clap on beat. At all. As in, he would just randomly clap whenever the spirit moved him while the rest of the theater clapped in time with the music. At one point, his mom put her hands over his and tried to get him to clap on the beat. He shook her off and promptly returned to clapping at random intervals. You go, little march-to-your-own-drummer boy!
