You don’t often hear Clay Aiken and Silversun Pickups mentioned in the same breath, unless you’re answering a question about musical artists who couldn’t possibly much more different.
But the former “American Idol” runner-up and the newly minted Grammy nominees share a connection. Sort of.
Before Silversun Pickups broke through with their 2006 album “Carnavas,” lead singer and guitarist Brian Aubert and bassist Nikki Monninger worked on an Aiken music video, helping organize the extras on the shoot.
“It was the worst,” Aubert recalls to People. “It was so hot, we were all sweating, and we were just so hung over. This extra came up to me and was like, ‘Excuse me, aren’t you in that emo band?’ And I said no — then maybe. She’d seen us play at a club.”
The band is one of the nominees for best new artist (three years after “Carnavas” sold more than 300,000 copies) at the 2010 Grammys.
