Matthew Rhys, the star of FX’s series “The Americans,” has been cast as Mr. Darcy in a BBC production of “Death Comes to Pemberley.” The mini-series will help to mark the 200th anniversary of the “Pride and Prejudice” publication by Jane Austen.

“Death Comes to Pemberley” is based on a 2011 novel by P.D. James that takes the characters of “Pride and Prejudice” — most notably Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham — and puts them in a murder-mystery story six years after the events of the original novel.  The story begins when the now-married Elizabeth and Darcy ready themselves for their annual ball. When Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia — along with her husband, Wickham — arrives, everything comes to a shocking stop. As a murder investigation unfolds, it threatens everything and everyone at Pemberley.

In addition to Rhys as Darcy, Anna Maxwell Martin (“The Bletchley Circle,” “Becoming Jane”) will play Elizabeth and Matthew Goode (“Watchmen”) is set to play Wickham. Adapted to a screenplay by Juliette Towhidi (“Calendar Girls”) and directed by Daniel Percival, production is expected to begin in June. The BBC will release its three-part, serialized story toward the end of 2013.
