The veteran reporter reveled she had the disease during a broadcast of her MSNBC show “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” She said the cancer was caught during a routine screening, allowing her to quickly begin treatment.

“I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week, but instead discovered that I am now among the 1 in 8 women in this country — incredibly 1 in 8 — who have had breast cancer,”  she says.

Mitchell continues, “Luckily for me, I am one of the fortunate ones; we discovered it in the earliest stage, it hadn’t spread, and I’m already back at work with a terrific prognosis.”

Andrea Mitchell has been with NBC news since the late 1970s having served as chief White House correspondent and chief congressional correspondent. She moved into her current role in 1994.
