tim cook iphone 5s record sales gi Apple sells 9 million iPhones in record making first weekendThe iPhones 5C and 5S weren’t met with the warmest of critical reception when Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the updated line of smart phones, but the company got the last laugh when sales within the first three days of release broke records.

On Monday (Sept. 23), the company announced that it sold more than 9 million new iPhones during the first three days, beating the previous sales record for an iPhone launch, set last year, of 5 million. The behemoth sales also bested Wall Street projections, which forecasted sales between 5 million and 8 million.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet — more than 9 million new iPhones sold — a new record for first weekend sales,” Cook said in a regulatory filing on Monday. “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible. And while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5S’s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.

The sales launch was the first time iPhones were made available in China at the same time as in the States.  The boffo sales led to Apple’s stock rising more than 6 percent before the market opened on Monday. Not too shabby, if you ask us.
