Every child that grew up with “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” can remember at least one episode that gave them nightmares for weeks. The show covered it all from ghosts to creepy dolls and demon children. In the spirit of Halloween a generous (or sadistic, depending on your perspective) Reddit user has uploaded every episode to YouTube.
Just in time for Halloween, millenials can relive the show’s scariest moments. Zap2it
has compiled a list of terrifying episodes that cover the core horror tropes of creepy to get viewers started.
The Tale of Laughing in the Dark (Season 1, episode 2)
If “American Horror Story” didn’t reinforce a fear of clowns, this nostalgic episode definitely will. Josh is an arrogant kid who tries to prove the funhouse isn’t haunted and instead ends up being terrorized by the evil clown Zeebo. If the twisted make-up wasn’t enough, add a cigar, creepy voice and the carnival barker that seemed to be everywhere.
The Tale of the Midnight Madness (Season 3, episode 1)
So, clowns aren’t that scary? How about supernatural creatures? “The Tale of Midnight Madness” brings the oldest film vampire, Nosferatu to scare a brand new generation of kids. Is it the yellowing fangs, gaping mouth or decaying skin that made him so horrifying? Seriously, this was a show made for kids.
The Tale of Dead Man’s Float (Season 5, Episode 1)
The scariest thing about swimming should be drowning or that some little kid peed in the water. Leave it to “Are You Afraid of the Dark” to up the ante on this one too. In the Season 5 premiere, Clorice is trying to teach her friend Zeke to swim in the school pool, except the pool was built on a graveyard. Oops. So not only does Zeke have to figure out how to doggy paddle but he’s also got to get away from the creepy skeleton zombie trying to kill him. Swimming isn’t worth it.
The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner (Season 4 Episode 9)
This show had a weird obsession with clowns, but in this Season 4 episode they decided to combine a creepy court jester with drooling zombies. If the Ghastly Grinner set his eyes on you for too long then you turned into a blue-drooling zombified nightmare personification. The lesson here is never microwave your comic books, or wear sunglasses, or just don’t look anyone in the eye because who knows what evil powers they possess. If you catch your buddy leaking blue drool, know that it is time to run.
The Tale of the Lonely Ghost (Season 1 episode 3)
Of all the horror tropes, scary children are the absolute worst. This early episode proves exactly that when this seemingly adorable little girl ghost is found trapped behind a mirror. Poor Amanda was just trying to help the ghost girl out, only to find out she’s not nearly as cute as she looked. She tries to trap Amanda instead so that she can get out and to make things even creepier, the image of Amanda screaming with “HELP ME” scrawled all over the walls is one that will get stuck in your head for weeks. Lesson here? Don’t trust ghosts, no matter how innocent they look.
