arrested-development-marta-complex.jpgWelcome to the “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it
will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made the show one of our
most beloved TV comedies.Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix. We continue with episode 12 of Season 1, “Marta Complex.” It originally aired on Feb. 8, 2004.

“Marta Complex” makes excellent use of the fact that the Bluths, because of their previous life of privilege, have a really hard time dealing with people not like them. Michael and Gob’s confusion over what “hermano” means in Spanish lends a great farcical element to the episode, and the ongoing presence of Carl Weathers is hilarious.

Plot: At a party — Lindsay thinks it’s for her anniversary with Tobias; Lucille thinks it’s for Valentine’s Day — Michael makes a speech about not being able to heal “until you stop living a lie.” He’s talking about the family’s financial problems, but everyone else takes it as the impetus to make big personal changes: Lindsay separates from Tobias (although both remain in the model home), Buster moves out of Lucille’s, and Gob thinks Marta is cheating on him.

Milestones: Buster moves out of Lucille’s condo, and joins his brothers in falling for Marta. George Sr. starts selling his “Caged Wisdom” motivational tapes (“first 100 callers get free yarmulkes!”).

Huge mistakes: Marta realizes that Michael, not Gob, is the kind of guy she’s been looking for. Michael, finally figuring out what “hermano” means, realizes he’s tanked it with Marta.

Most sexual tension: Michael and Marta talk past each other as he tries to figure out who “Hermano” is, leaving both of them utterly confused.

Best narrator commentary: “Actually, ‘maybe tonight’ was a very popular candy slogan, and the chances were 1 in 8.”

Next on “Arrested Development”: George Michael plucks a strand of Maeby’s hair for a DNA test. Tobias finds out he’ll have to do a shower scene as Frightened Inmate #2.
