Welcome to the “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it
will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made the show one of our
most beloved TV comedies.Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix. We continue with episode 4 of Season 1, “Key Decisions,” which first aired Nov. 23, 2003.
“Key Decisions” isn’t as fall-off-the-couch funny as a couple of the previous episodes of “Arrested Development,” but it sets up a whole lot of things for the future of the series.
We get to meet the other Lucille, we see Michael fall for a woman at the wrong time — which becomes a recurring theme — and we see a lot of the tortured relationship between George Sr. and Gob. Even a seemingly throwaway line about Tobias’ whereabouts (David Cross isn’t in the episode) sets up the recurring role Carl Weathers will have later in the series. It’s likely the writers didn’t plan that from the start, but it’s a great little revelation upon rewatching the show.
Plot: Gob has himself incarcerated in George Sr.’s prison, both as a publicity stunt for his magic act and to get out of attending the Desi Awards with Marta. Michael ends up accompanying Marta to the awards and falls for her. Buster meets a woman, and Lindsay rediscovers her activist roots as a way to get back at Michael.
Best line: Lindsay: “I’ve always been deeply passionate about nature. Perhaps you remember Neuterfest?” Michael: “I’ll never forget your wedding.”
Secondary characters introduced: Liza Minnelli as Lucille’s vertigo-suffering frenemy Lucille Austero. Leonor Varela gets her first lines as Marta after being seen only in a brief cutaway in the last episode. It’s also her last appearance, as she’s replaced by Patricia Velasquez later in the season.
Notable guest stars: Clint Howard (EP/narrator Ron Howard’s brother) as Johnny Bark, the environmental activist blocking Michael’s development project.
Milestones: Buster utters “Hey, brother” for the first time. Michael keeps the stair car when he sells the corporate jet. First mention of Carl Weathers as Tobias’ acting coach, though he’s not seen. For the first time, someone says “I’ve made a huge mistake.” Which leads us to …
Huge mistakes: After Gob has himself locked up, he realizes there’s no private bathroom to pass the key he swallowed, and the line is delivered. Gob says it again after reconciling with Marta and deciding he wants out, again.
Most sexual tension: Michael is waaay into Marta after their Desi Awards date, but she’s not seeing him quite like that.
Best narrator commentary: “The warden was intrigued — less about the stunt and more about the prison beatings this brash magician was sure to receive.”
Next on “Arrested Development”: Gob learns the key he swallowed helped him survive the stabbing. Buster goes for it with Lucille Austero.
