Welcome to the “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it
will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made the show one of our
most beloved TV comedies. We continue with episode 6 of Season 1, “Visiting Ours,” which first aired Nov. 9, 2003. Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix.
Note: “Visiting Ours” was the sixth episode FOX aired during Season 1 and is sixth on Netflix as well. But it was actually the fifth episode produced and appears in the “correct” order on the Season 1 DVD.
Plot: Michael visits George Sr. in prison to get some information about their accounts, but he’s holding out. So, naturally, Michael tries to use Kitty’s crush on Gob to his advantage, much to Gob’s horror. Meanwhile, Tobias and Lindsay go to their first couple’s counseling session, where they do a role-reversal exercise that causes Maeby, who is tailing them, to get the wrong idea. George Michael, who has always been terrified of prisons, decides to go visit George Sr. to impress Maeby. Unfortunately, he picks a bad day — George Sr. is traumatized by some violence in the prison yard, and he in turn traumatizes George Michael, who is shocked to learn that his grandfather is guilty of the crimes. George Michael convinces Lucille to make a conjugal visit to George Sr, but unfortunately it coincides with a conjugal visit with Kitty.
Bluth Company status: Not good. Lucille has been downgraded to being just a pool member at the country club. No golf privileges! The horror.
Secondary characters introduced: Judy Greer gets her real introduction as George Sr.’s assistant Kitty, but since FOX aired this episode and “Charity Drive” out of sequence, she does appear before this.
Milestones: Tobias’s jean shorts are featured once again, though the audience has yet to understand why he wears them all the time.
Huge mistakes: Gob gets put in prison, in order to escape and win back favor in the magician community. He escapes by getting stabbed and landing in the hospital. Michael parks the stair car next to the fence at the prison, allowing inmates to hop the fence very easily.
Most sexual tension: Kitty and Gob, and Kitty and George Sr — but nothing trumps George Michael and Maeby, who share an awkwardly-long hug.
Next on “Arrested Development”: Tobias talks Lindsay into another session, where their therapist reveals that he’s decided to become an actor. Meanwhile, George Sr. comes clean about those international accounts: “There’s a chance that I may have committed some light treason.”
