arrested development the one where michael leaves 'Arrested Development' Season 2, episode 1 'The One Where Michael Leaves'

Welcome to “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made “AD” one of our most beloved TV comedies. Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix. Today we’re covering the Season 2 premiere episode, “The One Where Michael Leaves,” which premiered Nov. 7, 2004.

Finally we have made it to Season 2 of “Arrested Development.” It picks up with Michael trying to get away from his family once again, but as we learned in the Season 1 premiere when he said the same thing, his development is as arrested as everyone else in the Bluth family. The plot lines become more convoluted and complex this season, and a sense of that is introduced in “The One Where Michael Leaves.” Oscar moves in with Lucille, Buster gets sent to the army and Tobias at long last has blue-n himself. It’s all up hill from here, people.

Plot: Michael takes George Michael with him to start a new life in Arizona, but ends up being drawn back to his family when he realizes they didn’t even know he left. Then he finds out from Barry Zuckerkorn that he’s being investigated by police now that his father, George Sr., is missing, and he couldn’t leave the state if he tried. In his absence, GOB has been made president of the Bluth company and discovers papers with both his father and Saddam Hussein’s signatures on them, linking the two of them together officially. Lindsay and Tobias try out a new open relationship, and he gets his first taste of the Blue Man Group. Unfortunately he gets hit by Barry Zuckerkorn’s car on his way to try to audition and hospitalized. In the hospital, George Sr. disguises himself as Oscar, steals the files from GOB and flees the country to Mexico.

Bluth Company status:
George Sr. has escaped, GOB is in charge of the Bluth company and has spent more than $40,000 of the company’s money, and Michael is being investigated by police in his father’s absence. In his office, GOB finds papers tying the Bluth company to Saddam Hussein.

Notable guest stars: Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerkorn, Justin Lee as Annyong, Ed Helms as James the real estate agent and Ian Roberts as the literal doctor.

Memorable line: “Yes, I have a rape horn, Michael, because you took away my mace.” — Lucille Bluth. “Yeah, like anyone would want to ‘R’ her.” — Buster.

Milestones: Tobias sees Blue Man Group for the first time, Buster and Oscar continue to grow closer, and Buster joins the army. Also, Tobias says, “I guess I first blue myself,” which is one of the best lines of the series.

Most sexual tension: Oscar moves in with Lucille and tries to rekindle a relationship with her. Meanwhile, Lindsay tries to date Ed Helms’ real estate agent character who thinks he is just showing her a house for sale.

Allusions to Tobias being gay: Michael turns to Lindsay and says, “It’s not like you’ve never come to me with your marital problems saying, ‘Oh, help me Michael, I think my husband might be a ho–‘” at which point Tobias blows a horn to stop him from speaking. Also, when Lindsay and Tobias share the master bedroom together, Tobias notes that it’s “nice to be back in a queen” — sized bed, of course.

Best narrator commentary: “Tobias went to a try-out for the Blue Man Group hoping to be seen. Unfortunately, it was dusk, and he couldn’t be seen.”

Next on “Arrested Development”: Lindsay almost dates the literal doctor when he notes that she’s “really hot,” Michael gets the company checkbook only to find everyone else gotten to it first and Barry Zuckerkorn is having the “time of [his] life” in prison.
