Two friends whose lives have been touched by cancer are lobbying Mattel to create a bald Barbie to support children with cancer.
Rebecca Sypin and Jane Bingham started the Facebook page titled “Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made” in late December. As of Thursday (Jan. 12), the page has more than 48,000 fans. Bingham lost her hair during chemotherapy to treat lymphoma and Bingham’s daughter also lost her hair while battling leukemia.
“We’re not demanding that the company do anything,” Sypin tells the Associated Press. “We’re just hoping somebody sees this and can help us make it happen.”
Mattel hasn’t formally responded to the request, but Sypin and Bingham say they’ve received form letters saying Mattel doesn’t accept ideas from outside sources.
“I am totally for this! Young impressionable girls need to realize that beauty comes from the inside not always the outside!” wrote one commenter on the Facebook page.
What do you think? Should Mattel take a hint and make Bald Barbie? Would you buy one?
