Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) finally went full psycho on “Bates Motel.”
During Monday’s (April 13) episode, his older brother Dylan (Max Thieriot) walks into the kitchen in the middle of the night to find something incredibly bizarre. Not only is Norman wearing their mother Norma’s (Vera Farmiga) clothes and cooking breakfast, but he’s also completely taken on her personality. As strange as it is for Norman to become Mother Norma, it’s something Highmore almost wishes his character could experience more.
“The [thing] I like about the scene is the happiness with which and the calmness with which we see Norman going about his breakfast duties in the middle of the night,” Highmore tells Zap2it. “If it had been a scene — and Norma has many of them — where she loses it and she’s emotionally unhinged, I’m not sure it would have had the same impact as seeing someone who has been so traumatized by this event in that moment so happy.”
He notes, “There’s a part of you that thinks, ‘Oh, maybe it’s for the best that he just carries on doing it,’ because the rest of the time he’s not so happy.”
Over “Bates Motel’s” three seasons, Norman has slowly been taking on the identity of Mother Norma. She’s convinced him to kill people, and he’s been able to blame her for those murders. She even almost got him to try to kill himself. This alternate personality is something that plays a key role in “Psycho,” the story on which “Bates Motel” is based, so this scene of Norman becoming his mother physically is a pretty big deal.
“I think that side of Norman has been coming for a while, even within ‘Bates Motel,'” Highmore says. “It will both be shocking and bizarre to see it for the first time, to see Norman dressing up as Norma.”
“Bates Motel” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on A&E.
