maria susana flores gamez beauty queen killed in mexico Beauty queen killed in shootout sheds light on beauty pageant drug ties in MexicoMexican beauty queen, Maria Susana Flores Gamez, 20, was killed in a shootout between an alleged drug trafficking gang and Mexican military patrolmen.

According to a report by the AP, Gamez was traveling with the drug gang when the gun battle took place.

“She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout,” says state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera. “That’s what we’re going to have to investigate.”

An assault rifle was found nearby Gamez’ body.

This is reportedly the third incident linking beauty pageant contestants in Mexico to violent drug gangs. A critically acclaimed 2011 film, “Miss Bala,” centered on the surprising connection. The fictional movie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

A non-fiction book related to the same theme was published in 2009 called “Miss Narco.” The author, Javier Valdez, says Gamez’ tragic end is “a recurrent story.”

At the time of her death, Gamez held the title of 2012 Woman of Sinaloa. She had been modeling since 2009 and was enrolled at a local university.
