When she stood up to accept her Spotlight award at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, Katy Perry made sure to tell everyone at home to stay tuned — she’d be hitting the stage again a little later. “I want to say that these songs have been kind of like the diary of my last two years,” she told the audience. “And tonight, later when I get on the stage, I’m going to be singing my personal most intimate song for you this evening, a song that I wrote for this little film I have coming out Fourth of July weekend. You’ve got to go see it.”
Given her very public breakup with husband Russell Brand earlier this year, it’s hard not to connect the lyrics of “Wide Awake,” her song choice for the evening, with her personal turmoil. Wearing a cameo around her neck and a bridal gown, with mournful expressions on the faces of her dancers, Perry looked every bit the scorned lover.
For the performance, Perry took a cue from Pink’s breathtaking trapeze performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Her acrobatics weren’t quite so elaborate, but like Pink, Perry made sure to sing live — a rare occurrence at this year’s show.
What do you think of the performance?
