Enigmatic, independent, eclectic, massively successful, beloved worldwide by fans and peers, and yet never overexposed, Prince, the pride of Minneapolis, closed out the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on ABC tonight (May 19) in high style, accepting the Icon award with music instead of words.

The diminutive singer took the fire-themed stage rocking a ’60s look, with a short Afro, round sunglasses and fringed jacket, electric guitar slung around him, bringing Jimi Hendrix to mind — at least for folks his own age (54) and older — as he sang his 1984 hit “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Never as renowned as a guitarist as he has been as a singer and songwriter, Prince demonstrated that he can always hold his own with the best on the axe, including his band for the awards performance, talented proteges 3rd Eye Girl.

(Let’s not forget, Prince has long been a promoter of female artists, from Apollonia to Sheena Easton to Wendy & Lisa.)

He then segued into a new rock song, “FIXURLIFEUP,” part of a new album rumored to be titled “Plectrum Electrum.”

Then, after Prince showed everyone how it’s done, the show came to a end.
