black eyed peas gi 500 Black Eyed Peas land Super Bowl halftime show: Justin Bieber wasn't available? The Super Bowl is going (relatively) youthful for its musical entertainment.

The Black Eyed Peas will rock the XLV Super Bowl halftime show at
Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, reports the Dallas Morning News. Considering
the past five years of halftime show history, these 30-somethings are young.

In the past, multi-generational artists took on the task of entertaining,
allowing an appeal to both the younger and older audience. Since 2005,
however, the programming has been sticking mainly with classic
performers well over 40, some even qualifying for Social Security.

A look back at the halftime show musicians and performers in the 2000s:

2000 – Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton; Edward James Olmos
2001 – Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears, Mry J. Blige, Nelly
2002 – U2
2003 – Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting
2004 – Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake
2005 – Paul McCartney
2006 – The Rolling Stones
2007 – Prince
2008 – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
– Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2010 – The Who

Although we love the classic rockers, we’re relieved to see the Super Bowl
change it up. Also, we hate to admit it, but watching Pete Townshend last
year, we were afraid he was going to break his hip, not his guitar on

The Peas — comprising, and vocalists, Taboo, and
Fergie — are the first urban/hip-hop act since the infamous “wardrobe
malfunction” duo of ’04.

We’re hoping that this isn’t the last musical act announced  for XLV though.
There’s still time to add people, and there’s the national anthem to
think about.

We think country probably deserves its time in the sun
again, and it couldn’t hurt to have someone younger added to the mix. In
the era of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, each member of the Peas is
easily double the age of the teen sensations. Sorry Bieber fans, we’d
vote for T-Swizzle. She probably has a stronger appeal to the Super Bowl
audience than Biebs.

Are you cool with the Peas? Who’d you prefer?

[UPDATE: Pete Frampton was previously attributed with the bad hip, but it was Pete Townshend with The Who, who played in 2010’s Super Bowl. Apologies to both Petes.]
