john mayer ugly hat born and raised 'Born and Raised': John Mayer debuts at No. 1 despite the fact that he can't singJohn Mayer‘s still got it, ladies and gentlemen. His latest record, the first since he took a self-imposed break from the industry, has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. “Born and Raised” sold 219,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It’s not his best effort, numbers-wise. His 2003 album, “Heavier Things,” debuted at No. 1 after selling 317,000 copies, and 2006’s “Continuum” sold 300,000 in its first week, coming in at No. 2. “Battle Studies,” in 2009, sold 289,000 copies and debuted at No. 1.

Still, considering the fact that Mayer’s promotion for the record was hindered by his throat condition, it’s quite an impressive debut. While he was able to appear on talk shows like “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” he wasn’t actually able to sing, due to a build up of scar tissue on his throat called a granuloma.

Mayer won’t be touring any time soon to boost sales, but he does promise fans that he’s already hard at work writing the next record, so hopefully we won’t have to wait two years to hear from him again.
