Consumers are hardly cutting loose at the multiplex this weekend. The weekend’s splashiest release — a “Footloose” remake starring Julianne Hough — brought in an anemic $5.4 million in Friday (Oct. 14) box office sales. That puts it on track, reports The Wrap, to rake in $15 million for the weekend.
Our favorite “Footloose” Twitter comment came from Drunk Hulk, who tweeted this succinct, yet damning, review: “SORRY FOOTLOOSE REMAKE! DRUNK HULK NO SUPPORT ANYTHING THAT TAKE AWAY BACON!”
Hough, though, blissfully apparently aware of Drunk Hulk’s criticism, took to Twitter with her own more upbeat message: “Aaahhhhh #1 movie in America is FOOTLOOSE!
Thank you to everyone who went to see it last night!! Now spread the word! :)yay”
The other wide releases — “The Thing” (yes, another remake) — snagged $3.2 million, making it the no. 3 movie of the early weekend. Meanwhile, the Steve Martin/Owen Wilson comedy “The Big Year” had a small opening at $1.1 million. According to Box Office Mojo, Hugh Jackman’s “Real Steel” took the second spot in it’s second week of release with a solid $4.5 million in sales.
