green lantern vs parallax Box Office: 'Green Lantern' opens soft with $53 millionSo we guess this means no sequel?

Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern underperformed at the box office this weekend, bringing in $53 million, which didn’t meet the studio’s lowered expectation after experiencing a 21 percent drop-off from Friday to Saturday. The studio is hoping the superhero flick starring Ryan Reynolds experiences a Father’s Day boost.
The weekend’s other new release “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” starring Jim Carrey came in third with $18 million, meeting the studio’s expectation, but still underwhelming.

J.J. Abrams‘ supernatural thriller “Super 8” still had a super-strong hold on moviegoers this weekend. The film, which stars relative unknowns, had a budget of $50 million and has already grossed $72 million. Another win for J.J. Abrams!
“X-Men: First Class” starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender ($11.5M) and “The Hangover Part ll” with $9.6 million rounded out the top five.
