resident evil 320 Box Office: 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' wins, movie studios struggleThe fourth “Resident Evil” film easily won this weekend’s box office… but initial estimates have over-all sales at a two-year low.

The weekend after Labor Day is typically slow for new releases. “Resident Evil’s” $27.7 million haul amounted to more than the rest of the top five combined.

Notably, “Resident Evil: Afterlife” was released in 3-D, which offers a significant boost to the numbers. In second place is “Takers” with $6.1 million, followed by last week’s #1, “The American,” which brought in $5.8.

]]> The Top 5 is rounded out by “Machete” with $4.2 million and “Going the Distance” with $3.8 million. The rest of the Top 12 was as follows: “The Other Guys” ($3.6 M) “The Last Exorcism” ($3.4 M) “The Expendables” ($3.2M), “Inception” ($3.0M), “Eat, Pray, Love” ($2.9M), “The Switch” ($2.0M) and “Nanny McPhee Returns” ($2.0M).
