“Toy Story 3” opened to a whopping $41 million on Friday, June 18 — putting it on pace to post the biggest opening weekend box office ever for an animated movie. Its opening night numbers nearly doubled the opening-night gross of the 2009 movie “Up.”
“The Karate Kid” was bumped to second place and took in $8.9 million on Friday, while “The A-Team” was bumped to third with $4.2 million. “Shrek Forever After” was in fourth place with $2.5 million.
Rounding out the top 5 was the only other new release to in the top group — “Jonah Hex,” the action-western starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. It pulled in a paltry $2 million on opening night.
