transformers dark moon Box Office: 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' has the biggest opening of 2011After a relatively slow start for its Wednesday opening, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” picked up considerable Box Office power. Though the film’s opening didn’t surpass the last movie in the franchise, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” it did easily dominate the Box Office on Fourth of July weekend. The movie grossed an estimated $97.4 million from Friday through Sunday, bringing it to a total of $162.1 million. It will likely hit $180 million by Sunday.

“Transformers” bumped “Cars 2” into second place. The family fare grossed $25.1 million over the weekend, bringing its total to about $116 million. Still going strong is Cameron Diaz’s “Bad Teacher” in third place, raking in another $14.1 million, bringing it to an estimated $59.5 total.

In fourth place was the Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts led “Larry Crowne,” perhaps the biggest disappointment of the weekend. With two of the biggest movie stars in the world front and center, execs likely expected more than the $13 million weekend debut, for an estimated $15.6 by the end of the holiday on Monday.

Rounding up the Top 5 is teen-friendly “Monte Carlo,” fronted by Disney darling Selena Gomez as well as Katie Cassidy and Leighton Meester of “Gossip Girl” fame. The film was crushed by its box-office competition, taking in just $7.6 million through Sunday.
