News that the Disney Channel is developing a sequel to “Boy Meets World” has caused a wave of nostalgia to grip the Internet, particularly among those who knew and loved the series in its TGIF heyday.
The show, as you’ve probably heard, will center on the pre-teen daughter of Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel). By “preteen,” we’re assuming Disney means a girl in the 9- to 12-year-old range — which could run counter to information from the original series.
As Grantland notes in taking a deep dive into the sequel news, an episode in the final season (1999-2000) of “Boy Meets World” flashes forward to Mr. Feeny’s (William Daniels) retirement party, which takes place in 2006. At the party, Cory and Topanga reveal they have a baby girl named Beverly Glen.
Of course, it’s also easy to read the flash-forward (watch the episode, “Seven the Hard Way,” here) as a what-if scenario should the gang, all of them nursing hard feelings after a prank war, not resolve its differences. Considering the episode ends in a giant hug-pile, that future may be just a rough-draft version of “Community’s” Darkest Timeline and won’t necessarily come to pass. Which in turn would mean that Cory and Topanga had a child not long after the original series ended. (Grantland also points out that the episode immediately after “Seven the Hard Way” dealt with a false rumor that Topanga was pregnant.)
Would it matter to you if the “Boy Meets World” sequel retcons any part of the original series?
