brandy empty stadium show south africa gi Brandy performs to an empty stadium, walks off stage in South Africa

R&B singer Brandy is used to playing big venues. She is not, however, used to playing to an empty house. That’s what happened in Johannesburg, South Africa at the close of the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day. As a result, the singer sang only two numbers before walking off the stage.

Only about 40 people were there when Brandy began her set on Saturday (Aug. 17). The stadium holds 90,000.

The concert failure occurred because Brandy was the surprise closing act on a day when no one knew there would be a big concert. Thousands had been in the stadium earlier to watch football and rugby matches, but the crowds began to leave during the many musical acts that followed. South African TV ended its broadcast of the festivities. By the time Brandy was due to perform, only a handful of people remained in the fully-lit stadium.

A South African singer, Kabomo, had remained for the show and tweeted about it several times on Saturday night. His first post read:

“I have no words for what I just witnessed.

Following that, Kabomo provided an explanation:
“Brandy performed to an empty stadium. With the stadium lights on. She sulked after two songs and walked off.”

The singer didn’t seem terribly impressed, but he did give an excuse for the events:

“it was late. People didn’t know there was a concert after the games. No one knew Brandy was around. Maybe a 40 people audience”

Brandy is actually a very popular artist in South Africa — her albums have sold millions of copies in the country since the 1990s.
