Waited until the last minute to plan your Christmas dinner? Well have no fear, because Zap2it is here. Here are some of the most popular Christmas recipes to make your life just a little easier.
For starters, a breakfast casserole is the best way to start a family’s Christmas morning. The Betty Crocker recipe includes a mix of sausage, eggs, potatoes and cheese and is “impossibly easy” (or so the site claims). If you’re looking for something a little bit fancier, Lottie + Doof has a savory arugula, bacon and gruyere bread pudding that looks divine. Toss some of Paula Deen’s sausage balls on the side, and you’ve got your bases covered.
Moving on to the main meal, there are traditionally three routes one can take: Prime rib, honey baked ham or turkey. Your family might still be all turkeyed out after Thanksgiving, but if they’re not, Alton Brown’s turkey brine recipe is a good go-to.
Food Network has an array of prime rib recipes, but I like to trust Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond with all things savory and delicious. Her prime rib with a rosemary salt crust only requires an hour and a half to prepare and includes ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Bobby Flay’s recipe requires a bit more time and a few more ingredients, but has a thyme au jus that might appeal to some.
If you’re not going to cheat and buy a HoneyBaked or Carando ham, Food.com has a good copycat recipe to help yield the same results. In it, you baste the ham with pear and orange juices to keep the meat moist, and then top it with a brown sugar and honey crust.
For sides, Paula Deen’s green bean casserole is a good crowd-pleaser, but I personally am partial to the broccoli variety. Mix up your typical sweet potato casserole with Smitten Kitchen’s sweet potato and marshmallow biscuits, or just go for Emeril Lagasse’s twice-baked potato casserole recipe.
As for dessert, that’s up to you. Christmas cookies are a traditional favorite and one that can get the whole family involved, but I know I’m making Lottie + Doof’s apple cider cream pie and Chow’s chocolate ganache tart to make sure my family is consuming as many calories as humanly possible.
