brigitte bardot citizenship Brigitte Bardot citizenship: Actress threatens to follow Gerard Depardieu to Russia

French actress Brigitte Bardot is looking for citizenship outside of her home country. The animal rights activist is reportedly so turned off by the fact that two sick elephants are supposed to be put down that she has threatened to apply for citizenship in Russia.

“If the powers that be have the cowardice and the shamelessness to kill Baby and Nepal… I have decided to apply for Russian citizenship and leave this country, which is nothing more than an animal cemetery,” she writes in a statement.

This comes after Gerard Depardieu was offered Russian citizenship by Vladimir Putin. Depardieu’s reason for leaving France is slightly more selfish, though: He’s trying to evade a planned 75 percent tax on all French residents making over 1 million euros.

Bardot had taken part of a large petition against Lyon’s Tete d’Or zoo. The organization announced it planned to put down the two elephants who were sick with pneumonia over fear that they would infect other creatures there, but have given the animals a brief reprieve. After writing a letter to French President Francois Hollande earlier this week, Bardot revealed her new ultimatum. It remains to be seen if either Depardieu or Bardot follow through with their threats — or if Bardot gets the same personal invitation from Putin that Depardieu did.
