broadway barks 2009 Broadway Barks: Mary Tyler Moore, Bernadette Peters show love for homeless pups

Some of Broadway’s biggest stars turned out July 9 in New York’s Shubert Alley in an effort to find homes for pets at city animal shelters.

The 13th annual Broadway Barks event, organized by actresses and animal advocates Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, drew a pretty handsome crowd — including Sutton Foster, Bobby Cannavale, Bebe Neuwirth, John Larroquette and the cast of “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark.”

There were also dozens of homeless dogs and cats present for an on-site adoption drive.

Peters spoke on “Live With Regis and Kelly” earlier in the week about the adoption drive, and in keeping with the talk show’s track record with animals, one dog decided to go to the bathroom right in front of the hosts.

“It’s never enough, that’s all I can say,” Peters responded when Regis Philbin asked her how many animals they’ve found homes over the years, being careful to note that adoption should never be taken lightly. “It’s a lifetime commitment. But a rescued dog… will love you forever. They know the difference. They know they’ve been rescued.
