Brooke Shields co-hosted “Today” the morning after the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and called Miley Cyrus’ twerking, humping, half-naked performance “disturbing.”
Recalling her days as the former Disney princess’ co-star, Shields says, “I was Hannah Montana’s mother. I don’t approve.” As a half-decade-old clip of Cyrus and Shields rolls, Shields playfully asks, “Where did I go wrong? I’m her dead mother. Maybe that’s the problem.”
But then Brooke gets serious about the situation. “I just sort of want to know who’s advising her, and why it’s necessary,” she says of Miley. “I mean the whole finger thing, and the hand, and … Robin probably at that point was going, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea.’ … I feel like it’s a bit desperate. Are you trying to be Gaga? But Gaga is … she’s got a genius behind all of it, that’s not just display.”

As “Today” chooses to only show bits and pieces of the performance due to possible children watching, Shields laments the fact that her kids cannot watch Miley anymore. She says her now 7- and 10-year-olds were huge fans of Miley and got to meet her on the “Hannah Montana” set.

“And then we went to her Miley Cyrus concert,” Shields says. “And it was a very different vibe, and she didn’t have as much time to say hello to my kids. And I saw my daughter’s face, and I was like, ‘She’s busy; she’s obviously tired.’ And you could see [Miley] trying so hard to go against that [Disney reputation].”
But as for that VMA performance, Shields says, “It’s not necessary. It’s uncomfortable. And the tongue out, I think it’s just a little desperate … trying so, so hard.”
Still, Shields praises Cyrus’ talent. “[Miley] can sing beautifully,” she says. “And I feel like if she let’s that lead, rather than her bottom lead … ” Besides, Brooke says, “She went for it. You’ve got to give her credit. We’re all talking about her.

When the conversation turns to a subtle reminder about Shields’ own sexy displays as a teenager, she gives comparison to the intentions. “Listen, when I was doing Calvin Klein ads and I was young, there was a lot of controversy about that,” Shields admits. “But the ante keeps upping. I was very naive. I mean, I wasn’t reading into the dialogue the way other people read into the dialogue.”
Shields credits staying in school, having a strong family, and lack of social media back in her day for the fact that she thankfully didn’t turn out “a train wreck.”
