cannes 2012 michael haneke gi Cannes 2012: Palme D'Or goes to Michael Haneke's 'Amour'An emotional drama about an elderly couple coping with the deterioration of one of them following a stroke won the Palme D’Or on Sunday (May 27) at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Michael Haneke, “Amour” was considered a favorite for the award.

This is the Austrian director’s second Palme D’Or win. He previously won Cannes’ top prize in 2009 for “The White Ribbon.”

Second place, Grand Prize, went to Matteo Garrone’s Italian satire “Reality.” The third place Jury Prize went to Ken Loach’s whiskey-centric comedy “The Angels’ Share.”

Acting prizes went to Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen for “The Hunt” and jointly to Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for Romanian movie “Beyond the Hills,” reports the Asssociated Press.
