caprica 320 'Caprica' gets the ax at Syfy“Caprica” is done at Syfy.

The cable channel announced Wednesday (Oct. 27) that it’s pulling the “Battlestar Galactica” spinoff from its schedule effective immediately. The remaining five episodes will eventually see the light of day, at least: Syfy says they’ll air sometime early next year, but there’s no chance for a second season.

“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for ‘Caprica’ and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” says Mark Stern, head of original programming for Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

The show has struggled since beginning the second half of its first season on Oct. 5. None of its first three episodes back reached the 1 million-viewer mark (figures for Tuesday’s episode aren’t available).

Speculation about the show’s fate picked up last week when Syfy announced it was developing another “Battlestar” prequel called “Blood and Chrome.” Syfy hasn’t decided yet what will fill in for “Caprica” on Tuesday nights.
