The honor from Washington’s Kennedy Center is given to someone who has “had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain.” Burnett, whose long career includes six Emmy Awards and a place in the TV comedy pantheon for “The Carol Burnett Show,” will be the 16th recipient of the award.

“From her television program and appearances, as well as her performances on Broadway and in film, Carol Burnett has entertained generations of fans with her vibrant wit and hilarious characters,” Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein says in a statement. “We are delighted to pay tribute to this unique and beloved entertainer.”

Past Mark Twain Prize recipients include Ellen DeGeneres, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Steve Martin, George Carlin and Richard Pryor. Burnett will receive this year’s honor at a ceremony on Oct. 20.
