carole king musicares honoree Carole King is MusiCares Person of the Year for 2014Legendary singer-songwriter Carole King is set to be honored by the MusiCares Foundation as the Person of the Year in 2014 due to her prolific music career and charitable and philanthropic work, The Recording Academy announced Thursday.

The Academy, which is the organization behind the Grammys, will host a gala to honor King on Jan. 24, 2014, two nights prior to the Grammy Awards. Lady Gaga, James Taylor and Bette Midler are set to perform.

“[King’s] contributions as a songwriter and performer have truly changed the
landscape of pop music, and her philanthropy speaks volumes about her
generosity and personal passions,” says president and CEO of MusiCares Neil Portnow.

King is perhaps best known for her 1971 album “Tapestry,” which went 10x platinum and made her the first solo female artist to sell over 10 million copies of an album. It featured some of King’s biggest hits, like “I Feel the Earth Move” and “It’s Too Late.” And of course, “Gilmore Girls” fans know her as the singer of the show’s theme song, “Where You Lead,” which was also on “Tapestry,” and as the music store owner in Stars Hollow.

A musical about King’s life is set to open on Broadway in spring 2014, called “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”
