carrie underwood american idol Carrie Underwood to star in 'Sound of Music' production live on NBCNBC is moving forward with plans to broadcast a live, Broadway-style production of “The Sound of Music” in 2013 — and they’ve just found their Maria. “American Idol” alum and beloved country star Carrie Underwood has nabbed the lead role of Maria von Trapp in the three-hour musical event slated for next year.

“We’re thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron say in a statement, “and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have. It’s a particular joy to us as producers to see this amazing artist stretch into new territory with this classic musical.”

The producers, who were also involved in the film versions of “Hairspray” and “Chicago,” will include well-known songs from “The Sound of Music” movie as well as lesser-known Broadway favorites.

“It isn’t our intention to produce a remake of the movie version of
‘The Sound of Music’ – that would be artistic blasphemy,” Zadan says. “What we want to do, instead, is to give audiences a
completely fresh experience of this great Tony Award-winning stage
musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the
spontaneity of a live performance. And all of the actors will be singing
live; there will be no lip-synching to pre-recordings.”
