The host of the weeknight “Last Call With Carson Daly” as well as “The Voice” — which starts Season 2 following NBC’s telecast of Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, Feb. 5 — has a career that matches up closely to that of “American Idol” staple Seacrest. Both preside over hit singing competitions, morning radio shows, production companies and even New Year’s Eve specials.

“As a producer on the network,” Daly tells Zap2it, “I think that any time you can bring in content creators and people who are in the know and have the connections and the track record, like Ryan, it’s a benefit to our network. And, hence, really a benefit to me.” Seacrest has been mentioned as a potential contributor, and perhaps more, for NBC’s “Today.”

“We’re similar in a lot of ways, but we’re also different in a lot of ways,” adds Daly. “I think I order red wine and Ryan orders white. Actually, I hear he’s a very powerful young man, and that can only be good. I don’t know the extent of his deal with NBC Universal, but I think it can only be beneficial.”

Others on FOX’s “American Idol” did some trash-talking about “The Voice” over the weekend at the semiannual TCA gathering for television critics. Whether that stemmed from the fact that both contests are about to pursue viewers at the same time, whereas they overlapped for only a few weeks last spring, Daly is taking the high road.

“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the success of ‘American Idol,'” he reasons, “so you’d be a fool to not give them the respect they’re due for 10-plus years of paving the path for singing competitions. We’ve just tried to come up with a fresh take on what people already are enjoying, and I’m personally very proud of what we’ve done on ‘The Voice.’ And it really ends there for me.”
