reggae great dies Cedric Brooks dies: Reggae great was 70

Cedric Brooks, one of the greatest reggae saxophonists, has died. He was 70.

After falling ill in 2010, Brooks had been hospitalized in New York and was only able to communicate through small gestures, his sister tells the Associated Press. He passed away of cardiac arrest after three years in that condition, and leaves behind seven children.

Brooks fell in love with the saxophone while he was a student in Jamaica. His career took off in the late 1960s, and he went on to collaborate with artists like Count Ossie and Rastafari’s Mystic Revelation. At one point he even launched his own band, Light of Saba. Most recently, he was a member of the Jamaican ska band The Skatalites.
