cesar millan suicide gi Cesar Millan opens up about 2010 suicide attempt

Cesar Millan might be known best as the “Dog Whisperer,” but in 2010 he hit rock bottom. As had been previously revealed in 2012, Millan attempted suicide following his wife filing for divorce.

In a new interview that will air tonight on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams, MIllan opens up about what led him to take “a whole bunch of pills” to try to end his own life. In 2010, the divorce news came shortly after the death of Millan’s beloved pit bull Daddy, and then his two sons turned on him and blamed him for the split. To make matters even worse, Millan was left without any money due to his inattention to his “Dog Whisperer” empire.

“It’s like, ‘OK, I’m a failure. The reason why this has happened is because of me,'” Millan says. Paramedics were able to save his life after he took the pills, and the fellow patients in the psychiatric hospital Millan was placed in ended up being big fans of his. “That gave me — a sense of belonging,” he says. “I got a sense of purpose. I like to have a purpose in life.”

Millan went on to quit “Dog Whisperer” in 2012 and started a new show called “Cesar Millan’s Leader of the Pack” on Nat Geo Wild.
