Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday (Aug. 11) on a charge of domestic violence against his wife, “Basketball Wives” star Evelyn Lozada.
Johnson, a flamboyant NFL star who had gone by Chad Ochocinco (in honor of his jersey number 85) until earlier this year, allegedly headbutted Lozada as they argued at their home in Davie, Fla., about a receipt she found for a box of condoms.
Johnson was featured prominently in the season premiere of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” earlier this week; one scene captured him joking with Lozada about their unorthodox meeting via Twitter. The couple wed last month after getting engaged in 2010.
According to Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle, Lozada was treated at a hospital for a cut to the forehead.
Johnson was taken to the Broward County Jail, and will likely stay behind bars until he can appear before a judge, which might not occur until Monday.
The spirited Johnson, who finished fourth in the 10th season of “Dancing With the Stars,” is known for his celebratory antics on the football field and colorful personality, but until today has never had any major run-ins with the law.
On “Hard Knocks,” new Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin was shown criticizing Johnson for a press conference last week in which the football player dropped the F-bomb about seven times.
“You represent the organization, you represent everybody and it’s not the way we’re going to do it,” said Philbin. “We’re glad you’re here, like what you’re doing, but we all want to be on the same page as to how we portray this organization to the public.”
Looks like Johnson didn’t get the message.
