If you’re looking for the best sedan in its class, look no further than the American-made 2014 Chevy Impala. Consumer Reports rates Chevrolet’s latest Impala sedan as the top choice of other similar models.

“The Impala’s performance is one more indicator of an emerging domestic renaissance,” Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports automotive testing, says in a statement. “We’ve seen a number of redesigned American models –including the Chrysler 300, Ford Escape and Fusion, and Jeep Grand Cherokee — deliver world-class performance in our tests.”

The 2014 Chevy Impala scored 95 points out of a possible 100, which is impressive considering that the outgoing 2013 Chevy Impala scored only 63. Not only did the Impala get No. 1 among similar sedans, beating out the likes of the Audi A6 and Lexus LS 460 L, but it also earned the third-highest score overall from Consumer Reports.

So why did the Impala get its high rating? It averages 22 miles per gallon with a six-speed automatic transmission and 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and earned points for a big cabin and trunk, great acceleration and smooth handling. According to Consumer Reports, it is the Impala’s competitive nature that makes it such a gem.

“Impala is competitive with cars that cost $20,000 more, including the Audi A6 and Lexus LS460L, as well as the recently reviewed Acura RLX and Jaguar XF,” the magazine writes.
