If you’ve been a Zap2it reader for more than five minutes, you probably already know how much we love “Chicago Fire” star Taylor Kinney. Best known for his work on “The Vampire Diaries” as rarely-clothed werewolf Mason Lockwood (before he got his heart ripped out, that is), Kinney also made a splash as Lady Gaga’s love interest in her “You and I” video (and in her real life, too).
This week, Kinney debuts as Lt. Kelly Severide on Wednesday’s series premiere of “Chicago Fire,” from Dick Wolf. Severide is the brash, cocky, ridiculously attractive leader of the firehouse’s Rescue Squad. He blames Lt. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) for the death of a friend and colleague, but meanwhile, Severide is dealing with some secrets of his own. The fractured brotherhood in the firehouse sets the stage for a tense, high-action series with a surprising amount of heart. It’s the relationship between Casey and Severide that truly drives the show, which is why we couldn’t leave Kinney off Zap2it’s Ones to Watch for Fall 2012.
Get to know Kinney with our questionnaire below, and make sure to tune in to NBC on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. to see his work on “Chicago Fire.”
Zombie apocalypse or alien invasion?
Not afraid of either one. I have a lot of werewolf/vampire friends.
What was the last white lie you told?
That I can’t stand the taste of pumpkin spiced coffee. It’s actually not that bad, though…
Do you have any strange phobias?
Not really, but I do take a lot of showers, I find it really relaxing.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
This couch is extremely comfortable.
Tell us one thing that the general public doesn’t know about you.
I did not get a computer until I turned 30. I used to spend a lot of time at Kinkos.
What food can you just not resist?
Fried noodles. It’s a recipe that has been handed down through generations on my mother’s side.
What do your friends make fun of you for?
Taking too many showers and not getting a computer until I turned 30. I should say that the computer was a gift, I did not actually want the damn thing and am still learning to use it. At least I don’t use a landline phone.
What’s the most random thing in your wallet?
A business card for a place called ‘White horse ranch’. It’s a western themed town built by some German guy whose dream it was to live in the wild wild west. I helped a friend shoot a music video there a few years ago and loved the place. You dress up in full western gear, equipped with six shooters and boots with spurs. The bar is candle lit and littered with whiskey filled wooden barrels. I kept the card because I have always wanted to go back.
Who was your last text message from?
From one of my brothers. He always asked arbitrary questions and doesn’t respond for hours. He will send a text — “Hey” — and then, “Whats up”, “u figure anything out?”. I never know what the hell he is up to.
Is there a celebrity that you have met that made you feel star struck?
I met Benicio del Toro in Puerto Rico a few years ago, I was with a few friends and felt reluctant to approach him, he ended up being amazing, we talked shop and smoked a cigar just outside Old San Juan.
