Chrisbrown_court_290 Chris Brown will have to serve five years of probation, but no jail time, for his assault of his former girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown’s sentencing on Tuesday afternoon went down pretty much as expected following his guilty plea in June. He was ordered to serve five years of probation, perform six months of “labor-oriented” community service and undergo domestic violence counseling.

Brown was scheduled to be sentenced earlier this month for the February incident, but documents relating to his request to serve his probation in his home state of Virginia didn’t arrive in time.

Brown will do his community service, which will include tasks like picking up trash and removing graffiti, and attend a year-long domestic violence counseling program, in Virginia but will still be supervised by California’s probation department.

Judge Patricia Schnegg also issued a protective order stating that Brown cannot contact Rihanna while he’s serving his probation.

Brown, 20, was arrested Feb. 8 after arguing with Rihanna in a rented Lamborghini. According to a police report, their argument — over a text message from a former flame of Brown’s — escalated to the point where Brown punched Rihanna several times and held her in a headlock. A neighbor called 911 after hearing Rihanna scream for help.

The singer and “Stomp the Yard” star issued an apology via his web site last month, saying that he’s “continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again.”
