There’s one more person who doesn’t think Chris Brown’s relationship with Rihanna is a good idea. That person is Brown’s dad, Clinton Brown. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Clinton says he worries the relationship might not end well.
After the couple broke up following Brown’s assault on Rihanna prior to the 2009 Grammy Awards, Clinton hoped they would stay apart. “I personally really didn’t want him and Rihanna back together,” he says.
Clinton was in Los Angeles at the time of the assault and, while he wouldn’t divulge details, he claims the entire story has yet to be told. “One has to assume because they are back together that it wasn’t one-sided,” he says, “You just have to imagine it was a circumstance in which they both had a disagreement.”
As for why he thinks the reunion isn’t healthy, Brown explains, “You have to have a balance in a relationship. You have to have someone who is spontaneous and whimsical but you also have to have someone who is grounded and logical.”
Clinton says he understands his son’s attraction to the singer, noting, “She’s beautiful, she’s exotic, she’s successful.” He thinks the latter may be helpful to Brown, as “sometimes you just need that person who will listen to you without judging, who knows what it feels like. If he talks to someone who’s not in the business they may not understand.”
However, he seems to think the relationship could end tragically, saying, “I hate to use examples, but Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse — I mean I could go on and on,” adding, “Is that a given — that you can’t have fortune and fame without [death] being the end result?”
As for who Brown would rather his son have ended up with, a surprising name comes to mind. “I personally liked [‘American Idol’ winner] Jordin Sparks. She’s a wholesome young lady, very pretty,” he says. Sparks collaborated with Brown on the song “No Air,” on her self-titled debut album.
Clinton says he met Rihanna once years ago. While he may not be a fan of her relationship with his son, he says she “was very respectful and polite.” He also thinks she would make a good mother, but that “she would probably have to change some of her antics,” alluding to her partying. Brown says he believes the couple wouldn’t spontaneously have a child at this point in their lives, but “anything’s possible, man.”
