Chynna Phillips appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Friday to offer some support to her sister Mackenzie over her revelations of a sexual relationship with their father. Which is not to say she was thrilled to be there.
“She had the courage to come out and talk about it. I’m proud of my sister,” Chynna Phillips said. “Am I exceedingly joyful that my family secret, that I told maybe my therapist, my husband and my very best friend in the world [is now public]? … It’s very upsetting.”
Chynna Phillips was in the studio with Winfrey, while Mackenzie appeared via satellite from New York. Chynna said that she’s known about Mackenzie’s relationship with John Phillips, the Mamas and Papas singer who died in 2001, for about 12 years, and believes Mackenzie is telling the truth in her memoir “High on Arrival,” which details the incestuous relationship.
“The details around the book — how can a person who was doing drugs around all this, how can the details be perfectly accurate? I wasn’t there to see,” Chynna Phillips said. “But I do know there was a consensual relationship between my father and my sister that lasted 10 years.”
“I’m more in love with my sister than I have ever been,” Mackenzie Phillips said when the two had a chance to speak. “You spoke so beautifully about our dad’s heart and your truth. … I couldn’t love you more. I’m proud of you.”
“I’m proud of you too,” Chynna replied.
Winfrey also read a statement from their younger sister, actress Bijou Phillips, that revealed conflicted feelings about Mackenzie’s revelations.
The statement says that Mackenzie told Bijou about the relationship with their father when Bijou was 13. “The news was confusing and also scar, as I had lived alone with him since I was 3. I didn’t know what to believe, especially since shortly thereafter she told me it didn’t happen,” Bijou says.
She adds that she hopes Mackenzie “finds peace” by talking about what happened, but “the man who raised me wasn’t capable of such things. If he was, it’s heartbreaking to me to think my family would leave me alone with him. I understand Mackenzie’s need to come clean … but it’s devastating to have the world watch as we try to mend broken fences.”
“I love my baby sister. I miss having contact with her,” Mackenzie Phillips told Winfrey. “I understand how devastating this is for her. My heart goes out to her.”
