The 2013 CMT Music Awards have come to a close, but the evening didn’t go off exactly as planned. One scheduled performer was noticeably absent, though it wasn’t without cause.
Country music legend George Strait canceled his scheduled performance at the evening’s festivities following the death of his father, John Byron Strait, who passed away on Tuesday (June 4) at the age of 91.
“We are grateful for the time over the last few weeks we were able to spend with Daddy before he passed away,” Strait explained to fans in a statement on his website. “I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn our family’s loss.”
In lieu of gifts, Strait asked that donations be made to the Jennifer Strait Memorial Foundation, named in honor of his daughter. Funeral services are being kept private.
