Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Chuck Pagano has been diagnosed with promyelocytic leukemia, the team announced Monday (Oct. 1) in a press conference. He will be temporarily stepping aside for the 2012 NFL season to undergo treatment, including chemotherapy.
Colts owner Jim Irsay says the team’s personnel are “optimistic.”
“I feel with every fiber in my body, and I know Chuck feels the same way, that he can beat this thing,” says Irsay. “He’s upbeat and he’s ready for the fight. He’s tough as nails. He’s in great spirits.”
The news release from the team says that according to Indiana University Health, most adults with this form of cancer do achieve remission.
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has been named the interim coach.
